BINARY
CODED
Text passes through a reversible binary system and reappears as density, repetition and graphic intervention.

CONCEPT
For issue No. 36/2020 of the cultural magazine Quart, Toni Kleinlercher designed the left-hand pages in response to the texts printed opposite them.
Each composition begins with a binary encoding of the corresponding text. This coded material becomes the basis for different procedures of overwriting, compression, repetition and graphic intervention. Although the resulting fields appear abstract and largely unreadable, the original text remains structurally present: reversing the sequence of coding operations would lead back to its source.
The project continues Kleinlercher's investigation of decoding and recoding across literature and visual art. Meaning is not simply erased but displaced into another system, approaching what the artist describes as an “undoing through equality in emptiness.”

The print series developed from Kleinlercher's design of the left-hand pages of this issue. Each page is linked to the literary contribution facing it, while the works also exist independently as an edition of A3 inkjet prints.
