REALISED INSTALLATION / LITERARY CARTOGRAPHY2020

A personal archive of reading becomes a changing map of memory: first ordered, then exposed to airflow, chance and loss.

A PERSONAL
TIME CAPSULE

A suitcase holds 63 books collected and kept by the artist over decades. Together they constitute a contingent literary territory: both a record of reading and a personal time capsule.

For each title, Kleinlercher produced a cover painting. Inkjet prints and tissue paper are bandaged onto corrugated cardboard, reducing the different books to a uniform format of 10.5 × 14.5 centimetres. Their titles remain partially visible, while image, language and remembered content are compressed into material traces.

The 63 works were initially pinned to the wall in alphabetical order, from upper left to lower right. This provisional structure was then subjected to another system: an electric fan, integral to the installation, generated an airflow that randomly detached individual paintings. As gaps appeared, order became loss, chance and gradual transformation.

THE ARCHIVE

63 BOOKS
IN ONE SUITCASE

The suitcase remains present in the installation as the material origin of the wall field. It contains not a systematic library but the residue of a particular period of reading—preserved, transformed and simultaneously exposed to forgetting.

CRITICAL RESPONSE

MEMORY AS
MATERIAL TRACE

Wolfgang Koch reads the suitcase as a personal time capsule and the cover paintings as varying degrees of remembered reading. Their bandaged surfaces allow book, image and memory to alternate in intensity. Rather than functioning as a catalogue, the installation opens an associative field in which aesthetic experience itself becomes a mode of thought.
