THE LANDSCAPE AS
A MEASURING DEVICE
Five vertical stations translate conditions already present at a site into height, distance, proportion and orientation.
CONCEPT
Five very tall, slender poles are positioned in the landscape. Each carries a single ring whose diameter and height differ from those of the others.
The arrangement is not an abstract composition imposed upon the site. Its dimensions are derived from conditions found there: levels, distances, temporal changes and ecological data become spatial coordinates.
Measurement is therefore made bodily perceptible. Visitors read the work by moving between the stations, while the landscape continually changes the instrument through which it is observed.
